FREEZE-ZX: a premier gaming zine for ZX Spectrum enthusiasts

People are still making physical objects and you should support them.

FREEZE-ZX is a new A5 format fanzine from Vinny Mainolfi and the team behind the long-running Commodore 64 fanzine FREEZE64. This one is all about the ZX Spectrum which means it's right up my flagpole.

For £6.99 you get a full colour 36 page fanzine which mixes nostalgic features about the heyday of the Spectrum with bang up to date material about the ZX SPECTRUM Next and new games like Jet Set Steamboat Willie.

I should probably set out my limitations as a reviewer. I'm in this for the nostalgia buzz, as you might be able to guess from, I don't know, just looking at this blog. The articles I respond to best are ones which dip deep into the well of Spectrum history. FREEZE64 has done a lot of fantastic work tracking down and interviewing the programmers of old C64 game and I was hoping for something similar here, and I was initially a little disappointed to find the bulk of articles in the issue cover what I would instinctively flap my hand at and dismiss as "new stuff". However,  I understand that there's a lot of modern news that people who aren't me are interested in with the launch of the Kickstarter for the ZX Spectrum Next issue 3.

That said, the centrepiece of the issue is an interview with programmer Dave Sloan and it's great. It falls into the sweet spot of looking back at his personal history with computers and also covering the modern games he's created with his son for SloanySoft. The other big feature of the first issue is a review of his most recent game Jet Set Steamboat Willie, released to mark the 40th anniversary of Jet Set Willy and the point where the first Mickey Mouse cartoon Steamboat Willie finally fell out of copyright. You can download a copy of the game here and name your own price. Which is almost certainly something I should probably do.

You, yes you, can and should order a copy from here.

More please.
